An original painted sign from a nearby mining area
This is a photograph of a sign removed from an archeological dig at a dump site in Rocker, Montana, about 5 miles west of Butte. The sign says: “Notice - Do Not Molest or Shoot Chinese”. Rocker had a Chinese community that worked placer mining claims, and records indicate there were multiple incidents of the Chinese there being hung or shot for sport in the 1860's and '70's. The date of the sign is unknown, but it is likely to be from this same period.
The sign is now in the collection of the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives (SM160) and is reproduced here with their permission.
